i'm loving the multi-colorways starting at the 37 sec mark [directly following the baby bump move]. to be honest there isn't much i don't like in this video. i love her channeling audrey hepburn and ann margaret and diana ross and flashdance and any other cultural homage that went over my head.

part of me finds it simultaneously funny and sad that the border around the video on youtube is an add for Kelly Rowland's latest single.

my favorite meal: dessert. let's pretend that the copious amounts of sugar doesn't cancel out the nutritional value of the fruit, shall we. it's just goooood!

i found online [google, will you marry me?] a super duper easy peasy cobbler recipe. 1/2 box of yellow cake mix. 1 stick of butter. shmoosh the two together and then dump onto the sliced up fruit goodness and bake. voila! peach "cobbler".

oh summer! you evil wench of a season! you have to go and be so nice outside...why would i want to be inside cooking?! and you have to encourage all the plant life to bear these delicious offerings, begging to be cooked when you know darn well it's too hot to put the over or stove on!!

well then. you know what i have to say to that? pickling and fermenting!! it's too soon to say how this all turned out, but i think it will be a-ok. and in the mean time i'll be reading up on the health benefits of fermented food.

ratatouille! it's not just a disney movie that i haven't seen because i don't like cartoons [don't judge]! it's also a french provencal dish that makes me feel fancier than dubbing it simply veggie stir fry. bonus points for using many different veggies up at once.

served over a barley & buckwheat mix. there were leftovers for lunch, which is great because this is the kind of meal that is better the next day!

as far as i'm concerned, cabbage has a bad wrap. i think it's their poor reputation that trickled down to it's little euro brother, the brussel sprout, and had them picked on in the veggie playground as well. say what you will about this cultivar, but for the purposes of the CSA challenge, i appreciate it's hearty sensibilities that let me cook it later in the week while i watch the other vegetables do gross things [soft spots, browning, and wilting- oh my!]. thank you cabbage for letting me ignore for a week and still be a delicious side dish.

this took such little effort. slice. salt. squeeze a lemon. roast. voila!

did i mention that cabbage also might prevent the growth of cancer cells? yeah for healthy food that tastes good!

today i decided to walk from Columbia to Union Square via Broadway to catch the L home. that's 102 blocks. along the way i had a surprise day date with the city. at the half mark, I walked into the Museum of Art and Design. my school is in cahoots with every museum in the city [!!!] so that students gain admission free of charge. holla! everything free of charge on a schedule-free day sounds like a good idea, especially when it's an art museum i've never been to!
and on the 6th floor, my surprise day date with the city reunited me with my former flame: David Bowie!

not in person. but there was multiple flat screens and headphones to watch his videos. like this one, so good.

the Museum is hosting the retrospective showcasing Bowie, the performance artist. sadly i missed their screening of Labyrinth that was back in June. wamp wamp. i really have inappropriate feelings for David Bowie. i'm not going to let a bunch of words get in between the feelings i have for him, so i'll just share another of of his wacko videos.

also noteworthy and very worth checking out is the Otherworldly exhibit. there are dioramas!!

CSA challenge, sweet pea & corn risotto

CSA challenge continues. this time i'm taking on the bag o' snap peas.

here's an attempt at a sweet pea & corn risotto. it was...eh. sometimes i lose steam whilst combing recipes or wilt from the heat and really just want to eat a bowl of cereal for dinner. i think it was one of those uninspired evenings which led to this lackluster dish. i'll try it again, and be sure to come at it full steam. or at least full A/C pumping.

and then for a snack, i chowed down on these suckers, which i had to google to know what they were [they're goose berries].

every other saturday our fridge is assaulted with the CSA farm pick up. greens and berries and greens overflow each shelf and pull-out bin. for the first 24 hour hours i'm giddy with excitement as i plot and plan delicious and nutritious meal options made from the local fare.

by the time hour 36 rolls around i begin to realize that the fresh, fresh food is becoming less so and i need to shake a leg if i want to utilize a good 60% of the share. and here, the challenge was made: how can i cook the most amount of the farm pick up before it rots. bonus points for creativity, tastiness, mixing up new recipes, and utilizing all parts of the fruits and veggies [oh radish greens, i will use you!!].

i am a very sophisticated and classy individual. this is underscored by my highbrow choice in comedic cinema, such as the 1996 hit Happy Gilmore. in one scene, Happy calls after his lover via the apartment intercom, serenading her to return.
since i lived in a pop-cultural black hole until 1993, i was not familiar with the song Happy sang. but i certainly have sung it again and again in jest, referencing the scene. since i had no idea how the song was initially performed, i always envisioned it as a hard rock song, along the lines of Kiss. well leave it to a moment of procrastination to discover otherwise:

i'm not sure why i'm surprised that there are these disco undertone, it was '78.
AND i'm fairly sure that frontman Jimmy Stockley and I have shared a hair stylist. at least i was being ironic.

oh koreatown. thank you for bringing me Paris Baguette. what an odd combo of french-style pastries filled with asian flavors. the X-shaped pastry on the left [not my photo, thanks google] is filled with green bean paste. i agree that sounds like it could be no good and horrible, but i assure you it's quite the opposite.

another reason to love Paris Baguette is that all their employees wear berets and stripes [again, thank you google image search for the photographic proof]. the francophile that i am adores this.

call me crazy, but looking at a burnt out car as i exit or return to my apartment just ain't my thang. probably because i'm so high brow.

and probably because my lovely neighborhood has been pulling itself up by its bootstraps over the last 2 decades [please let's just avoid the gentrification tangent for a moment and focus on the positive, shall we] and abandoned car carcasses aren't doing much for the general aesthetic.

here's where my particularly low-threshold impatience comes in handy to my fellow neighbors, whom i'll assume are also none-too-happy about the charcoaled astro van. [backstory: a car caught on fire and has been left untouched since sunday on my street and it's ugly and it smells and is an eye-sore. and i seriously doubt anyone is chomping at the bit to do a thing about it]. i decided today, that hell, i'm over this, let's find out how much longer its going to be sitting there. complaining is all fine and well, but its even finer and weller when, should you complain to the correct person, you actually accomplish something! preemptive hooray for a not-yet-accomplished job!

and here, now, with you, dear reader, we will go on the long bureaucratic journey that is :

GETTING SOMEONE TO REMOVE A BURNT-OUT, ABANDONED CAR!

step #1, call 311

unsurprisingly, the operator passes the buck to the police, but not before she astonishingly questions why in god's good name would i want a burnt-out car removed from my street. i mean, it's only been there for 4 days. i mention to her that it smells [which it does, something terribly acrid and what i can only imagine to be poisonous, carcinogenic fumes lingering around the automobile...yuck!]. she says this problem isn't her problem and to try the police, 88th precinct to be exact.

step #2, call 88th precinct

similar 'round about as above, but this time they say, oh golly gee willikers, would love to help a dame like you out, but you've got the wrong guys. try the 79th precinct.....

step #3, call 79th precinct

hmmm, i'm onto the trend here. no one wants to take responsibility. gotcha. at this point, i'm pointed to brooklyn sanitation, everyone's favorite government department! yay!

step #4, dept of sanitation nyc

the man on the other end of the connection informs me of two things: 1. everyone is passing the buck and 2. its's not in his jurisdiction. i'm not sure if he thought he was off the hook of said buck-passing by enlightening me to the other buck-passing, or if he thought that by acknowledging his own buck-passing it rescinded him, but either way he offered yet another outlet to my complaint: my community board. mister dsny says that the plates need to get gone, then the po-po have to tag it, then sanitation can whisk the car off to the big garage in the sky.

step #5, cb 3

newsflash, apparently complaining to your local community board can be more effective than 311. find out your cb here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/cau/html/cb/main.shtml here, i am greeted with the most preternaturally upbeat woman; so upbeat that i'm convinced she must be mocking me. i move past my paranoia and give all the details that i've repeated so many times that i may recite them in my sleep tonite. i am told that it's already 5pm [its 4:30pm] and that nothing can be done about it today, may she have my number. sure, why not. oh, what's that? my cell is no good to you with its boston area code because YOU DON'T HAVE LONG DISTANCE?! really?! wicked pissa. fine, take my office number then, whatever. can't wait to chat tomorrow, new besty!

the phila flower show is the world's biggest indoor flower show. more than 1/4 million folks wander the convention center each year to stare at petals and leaves and dirt.

i was commissioned again by the good people at the american ivy society to throw some murals on the walls. over two cold days in the unheated convention center, i painted 260 sq ft in 16 hours.

the american ivy society's interpretation of the 'passport to the world' theme was japan; one mural was mount fuji [18' x 10'] and the other was cherry blossoms [8' x 10']. the 2010 phila international flower show runs Sunday, February 28th through Sunday, March 7 at the Philadelphia Convention Center.

furthermore, the art adventure doubled as a trip to the homeland. a special shout out to the mama y papa and the lovely, talented miriam singer [http://www.inliquid.com/artist/singer_miriam/singer.php] for their hospitality and car rides.

in a land of office desk sitters facing keyboards and monitors, the online world of communication trumps most face to face contact. this is sad. but this is how it be. i already have a flickr and a myspace and a facebook. i even still have a friendster. and there's gchat and aim and ichat. and about 5 or so different email accounts, which is completely unnecessary. however, for more lengthy rhetoric, this seemed like the best venue.
